A Mother's Reflections... In honor of Mother's Day, for the next three weeks, we will be showcasing Cherry Republic's longest and oldest employee-- my mother. For 19 years, she has been greeting customers, making deliveries, bagging cherries, putting out samples and making gift boxes. She's tried to quit, retire, get fired... Now, she's 78-years-old, and still here helping me along. Momma Mary is at Cherry Republic most days offering advice, guiding the other employees, helping customers, even though I am now 46-years-old, modestly raised and educated, able to cook and eat, drive, raise children, add and subtract, and you'd think run a company without the help of my Momma. Happy Earth Day! Yesterday was Earth Day. It was a big day for Cherry Republic. We had a full staff meeting/celebration (minus me, who was at jury duty), to unveil our short- and long-term plans to increase our energy conservation and efficiency efforts within our company. Each year we are going to tackle one major green effort. In the next month, Cherry Republic will put solar thermal hot water heaters on the cafe roof. Then, during eight months of the year, the sun will heat the hot water to be used for our washing, cleaning, baking, etc. Also this year, we are changing incandescent light bulbs to CFLs, insulating better, unplugging appliances when not in use, and several other conservation efforts. Our long range goal is to reduce the electricity we purchase from our utilities by 40%. Read more in the Record Eagle about our efforts. |
